Could it be US? (U.S.)
Nov 07, 2011The politicking and intrigue within the EU as the Greek debt crisis continues, bears more resemble to a roller coaster ride than a effort at problem-solving serves as a good object lesson for those of us in the U.S. As the presidential gamesmanship continues in the U.S. it remains the responsibility of the public to carefully evaluate its choice for president in the 2012 election. The lessons from the EU can teach more than fear; they can be instructive to the voting public. Here are a few of the lessons:
- Don't vote for someone who tells you that they can fix this. They can't. It is going to require years of reworking the financial system.
- Don't back the person who promises that we can get back to the financial exuberance of the latter part of the 20th c. That is a false promise. The globalized world dictates changes that make the U.S. economy interdependent with emerging markets.
- Don't listen to the person who asserts that only if the U.S. operates in a more isolated economy will jobs and economic fortune return. This is again, a false promise. U.S. markets must work with other powerful nation states, now more than ever.
In order for the U.S. economic engine to surge, it is going to take a combination of domestic innovativeness, international cooperation, a review of financial regulation, and a push for education & research. The leaders in the PIGGS countries all too often made promises that got them elected, but ensured disaster for the state. As the voting public looks at the current crop of presidential candidates, listen for the person who tells it like it is. There are no easy answers. We need to avoid the lessons from the soap opera of the EU and get the U.S. economy back on track through hard choices grounded in wise leadership so as to ensure the future of the state.

agreed! Promises are never kept. People seem to forget we have a Congress that any President has to work with!Isolation won’t work because of globalization! The founding fathers must be rolling in their graves! Especially Patrick Henry!
